TAIZE Prayer: A celebration of silence

A time to pause… a place to be… a moment with God.

This was the theme of the first Taize Prayer that was organized by the Penang Diocesan Youth Network on Friday, July 22 from 7:30-8:30 in the evening.  It was an evening of meditative prayer through songs and short moments of silence.  The Media Room of the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows was converted into a place of prayer where a crucifix was placed at the altar adorned with lighted candles and yellow flowers.

Young people and parishioners from the City Parish, Church of the Immaculate Conception and the Church of the Holy Spirit came together for an hour of prayer and a simple fellowship at the school canteen adjacent to the Media Room.  Ashley, from the City Parish, facilitated the prayer and gave a short introduction about the Taize community in France and the dynamics of the prayer.  His team of musicians led the congregation in the singing of Psalms while Cherine Benedict and Michael Peter Foo read the Gospel and the intercessory prayers, respectively.

The prayer ended with a blessing and words of gratitude from Rev. Fr. Dominic Santhiyagu, parish priest of the City parish and PDYN director.

The next Taize Prayer will be in October at the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows.  Come and pray with us!

Focusing on this year's diocesan theme on family , a camp with the theme "Arise Youth, Shine in Family" was  a good start to the Tamil youths in northern district and other districts. The camp  helped the youths to realize and understand about their responsibility to the family. The camp started with praise and worship and followed by sessions conducted by Fr. Victor Louis (NBVM,Butterworth parish priest)  and Bro Kevin.

Next day,  the mass was celebrated by Fr. Dominic Santhiyagu. In his homily, he explained more about the theme of the camp. After that, another session was conducted by Bro Kevin. The session helped the youths to reflect about their family.

Voters Registration

PENANG: As there is a possibility that the General Election will be held soon, the students from the Campus Ministry Office in the Diocese of Penang, took on the initiative to register voters from some of the parishes in Penang. They started off with the Church of the Immaculate Conception on Aug 7 and 8 but due to the short notice, managed to register only 5 voters.

However during the Feast of the Assumption at the Church of the Assumption, they managed to register 14 voters. A voters’ registration booth was set up in front of the Assumption Church. Ten students from USM and one Campus Ministry Officer, Liew Man Lee, were involved in the voters’ registration exercise. The volunteers were helped by two Suruhanjaya Pilihan Raya (SPR) representatives.

On Sept 5, the Campus Ministry Officers, Anne Beatrice and Liew Man Lee, together with three USM students went to the Church of St John Britto. They were assisted by Martin Lim, SPR representative and managed to get 18 people to register as voters. All together, the students managed to register 37 voters. — By Maureen Chua
