A year after WYD - Michael Peter Foo

Time flies without me noticed. It been more than a year since I went for the first world youth day (WYD) in Madrid. I scanned through my old emails in my maibox and found my Itinerary to WYD last year. 

At first I am uncertain about going to WYD, no urge for me to go for it. However, with God grace I managed to pay up the expenses through numerous sponsors. Never ask never know is my motto that time. With you genuine appeal, some will respond to it. 

When the logistic preparation part settled, SPIRITUAL PREPARATION is another important part. WYD is a pilgrimage, spiritual journey, thus, I need to prepare myself spiritually through prayer and meditation. I had a combined spiritual preparation as Penang Team.

The day come when I am going to the real "battlefield". I says 'battlefield' because I am ought to face all kinds of adversities both physically and spiritually in a foreign-land. I was housed in a sports-centre in outskirts of Madrid, a serene countryside called Las Rosas. I started my pilgrimage officially in a small church with another congregation form Wales along with their Bishop. I have to rough out in the basketball court in the sports centre. Each of us were given pilgrimage bags which contains a "Magnificat"- our spiritual guide book, which contains Liturgy of Hours and Mass texts for all the days in WYD. I were also given food coupons and general guide books to inform us how and what's going on what time. 

They are temptations once I goes to the city of Madrid, SOL is among the famed places along the way to my spiritual destination. I am amazed, wherever I go, I see pilgrims from different continents, culture and language. All are friendly and shared the cramp Metro, shared laughters, language is never the boundary. 

I experience the universality of the Apostolic Church for the first time, I attended the Opening Mass celebrated by the Archbishop of Madrid fully in Spanish. Amazingly, with the aid of Magnificat & impromptu translation via radio, we can follow through.  I take time off for some silent moment to reflect and meditate in front of the blessed sacrament after asian youth gathering separating from my companions that are rushing for Marian Fest. From that silent moment with our Lord, I found true peace and happiness.  

For the vigil in Cuantros Vientros a military air-field with Pope Benedict XIV, I was given a pass to sit in the front stretch facing the altar. It was an ultimate physical challenge for all the pilgrims, sit under the scouring hot summer sun and the vigil was greeted with  a thunderstorm which eventually stopped the prayer of Pope. The gigantic spotlights on top of me are swaying vigorously, it is really a test of faith to me. We were asked be quiet and pray for 10 minutes, then the thunderstorm just died out. For me, it is a prayer from God's Vicar answered.

 I have to sleep in the soaking wet ground, being pushed to the fence of my designated site. All the hardship actually is a blessing in disguise, I have the chance to see Pope so close that I can't imagine in my whole life. It is less than 50 metres away in his Pope Mobile. So close that I can capture a clear picture with my compact camera.

It's been a year after I got the great experience. I am thankful to all the benefactors that materialised this pilgrimage of mine. With that experience I had, I can proclaim in conviction of the Creed that: "I believe in one Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church."I know that not all youths can have the chance to go for world youth day or Asian youth day. Many youths might just go for the same mass every week, seeing the same faces over and over again. 

The experience that WYD and AYD can be brought to the diocesan level by bringing all the youths together to live, play and most importantly pray together as a universal church. Youthfulness is something money can't by, only come once in a life time. By offering the unique experience to the youths, only will they know that the Church is more than the same mass and crowd that they used to.

I hope that the youths will take this chance that comes 'once in their lifetime' because all are youths once. If there's another Diocesan Youth Day years ahead, they are no longer as youthful as they are now. I would like to end this sharing by the video that motivates me to go for my WYD.

Northern Region Youth Gathered for PDYD 2 District Level Celebration

Two hundred eighty participants from the six parishes in the Northern District attended the Penang Diocesan Youth Day 2 Northern District Level Celebration which was held on August 25, Saturday, at the Church of Christ the King Hall in Sungai Petani, Kedah.

Young people from the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary  (Butterworth), Church of St. Anne (Bukit Mertajam), Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (Kulim), Church of the Holy Name of Mary (Permatang Tinggi),  Church of Christ the King (Sungai Petani) and Church of St. Michael (Alor Setar) came by buses as early as 8 o´clock  in the morning  and enjoyed a day of fun, prayer, songs and various inputs given during the sessions.

Rev. Fr. Dominic Santhiyagu officially launched the celebration after the Enthronement of the Bible.  The participants, led by the Northern Region Music Band, sang the PDYD 2 themesong, “Come People of the Risen King”. The Getting-to-Know-You was done through the Baton Game facilitated by the young people from the Church of St. Anne.  As the baton was passed around, participants introduced themselves and shared their hobbies. The game ended with participants laughing and feeling comfortable with one another. 

The culmination of the morning session was celebrated with the mass at the Church of Christ the King.  Fr. Dominic, in his homily, invited the young people to “walk the talk”.  He explained that words do not really describe what we want.  Rather, our actions will make people understand what we really want.  He challenged those present to proclaim the Gospel by words and most importantly, by their actions.  Most of the time, leaders are capable of saying wise things but their actions speak otherwise.

The invitation to “Walk the Talk” was further explained during the session on the topic, Go and Tell.  The participants were divided into three language groups namely: English, Mandarin and Tamil with Martin Wong, Michael Peter Foo and P. Kevin Eruthayanathan as facilitators, respectively. 

The one-day Northern Region youth celebration ended with a “Talent Time“.  Representatives from each parish put up a show for everyone to enjoy and, at the same time, learn something from it. The St. Anne youth group performed a skit about Lazarus and his sisters entitled, “CSI:Operation Lazarus”.  The youth from the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus related the Bible story in a skit that left the participants silent yet inspired by the message that was conveyed by the presentation. The Church of the Nativity of Blessed Virgin Mary performed a skit with a message that without God, Satan takes control of us and makes us lost in his world of benefits. The youth from the rest of the parishes entertained the participants with their well-applauded dance moves.

After having tea, the participants got on their buses and left with a smile on their faces, a sign that they are really looking forward to the big celebration that will be held at Penang Island on 16^th -19^th November 2012.

Church of the Divine Mercy Welcomes PDYD 2 Cross and Icon

On the 26^th August, 2012 the parish of the Church of Divine Mercy, Penang, welcomed two symbols of our faith that was currently being carried by Catholic Youth all around the Penang Diocese. Six youth of the parish carried five parts of a wooden cross and an icon of Our Lady up to the altar. They then assembled the cross and placed it and the icon beside the altar in full view of the congregation.

The cross was the symbol chosen at the end of the Holy Year of Redemption, in 1994 and entrusted to the youth to be carried out into the world. The Icon of Our Lady, ‘Salus Populi Romani’, is a copy of the sacred and ancient icon found in the Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome. This icon was given to the youth by Blessed Pope John Paul II to accompany the world youth cross in 2003. Both these symbols were presented to the youth of the world not just to carry them for a few moments but in example of their daily lives. Thus, the Penang Diocese have adopted this concept where the cross and icon had been travelling all around the parishes in preparation for the PDYD2 which will be held from 16 – 19 November 2012.

The ceremony had begun at the end of the 9 am mass when a video clip was screened to introduce the activities of the Penang Diocese Youth Day 2 (PDYD2). The PDYD2 theme song entitled, Come People of the Risen King, was sung during the assembly of the wooden cross on the altar. The celebrant, Fr. Martin Arlando then invited all youth to come forward for a prayer and special blessing.

As an added joy to the celebration, there was a presentation of a basket of fruits to Fr. Martin to celebrate the first year anniversary of his sacerdotal ordination.

Risen Christ Youth Celebrate PDYD 2

        “Come, blessed of my Father” (Matthew 25:34) was the invitation given to 28 young people of the Church of the Risen Christ who came together  on 11^th August for an afternoon of reflection on the theme of PDYD 2, “Rejoice in the Lord always!”(Phil 4:4).  

        It started with the Enthronement of the Bible and an opening prayer led by Mr. Sundanadas Sebastian who also shared his reflection on the PDYD 2 theme.    He gave the youth five points in answer to the question, “Why is there a need for the youth to rejoice in the Lord always?”    He elaborated on the promise of spiritual salvation given to all followed by having the honour and blessing of being a child of God (1 Jn 3:1-3).  He also explained a verse on David´s song, I rejoiced with those who said to me, “Let us go to the house of the Lord” (Ps 122:1) as a blessing for being members of the assembly of God.  And lastly, he assured the young people that rejoicing in the Lord is a privilege to worship our God (Eph 5:19-20) and an opportunity to study God´s inspired Word for a dedicated Christian.

      The young people then animated the Sunset Mass that followed.  They also joined in the entrance procession, carried the five parts of the PDYD 2 Cross and assembled it at the altar before Fr. Maiccal Sinappan, the parish priest, blessed it with incense.    

      The PDYD 2 Cross then will be brought to the last two parishes that will be celebrating PDYD 2 in the parish level: Cathedral of the Holy Spirit (30 August 2012) and City Parish (1 September 2012).

PDYD 2 and Taizé Prayer in IC

 The youth of the Church of the Immaculate Conception came together on 4^th August for the PDYD 2 (Penang Diocesan Youth Day II) Parish Level Celebration. It started with the PDYD 2 Cross and Icon being carried to the altar during the thanksgiving song and was followed with an evening of fellowship and prayer at the Parish Hall. 

    The participants shared a simple dinner before the start of the program.  Fr. Dominic Santhiyagu, the director of PDYN, gave a comprehensive overview of the 4-day celebration which will be held on 16^th – 19^th November 2012.  He also encouraged those who were present to be part of the event and be empowered by the gift of one another´s youthfulness and of a deeper knowledge of Jesus Christ, the focus of this celebration.

The Hall was filled with angelic voices the moment the members of IC Latin Choir started singing the hymns during the Taizé Prayer.   The prayer was the offering of the parish youth for all the young people of the Diocese of Penang, the members of the organizing committees, volunteers and resource persons.

South Perak District Youth Celebrate PDYD 2

         The Church of Sacred Heart, Kampar welcomed 128 young people from the five parishes of the Penang Diocese South Perak District for the Penang Diocesan Youth Day II (PDYD 2) District Level celebration. Young people from Tanjung Malim, Bidor, Tapah, Teluk Intan and Kampar came together on 21st July 2012 for a day of prayer, sharing of experiences, camaraderie and fun. Clara Susaie from Teluk Intan commented,“It was awesome! I never experienced something like this before.”

         The Eucharistic Celebration, presided by Fr. Dominic Santhiyagu and concelebrated by Fr. David Lourdes, set the tone for a very fruitful and spirit-filled gathering. In his homily, Fr. Dominic encouraged young people to respond to the invitation of Jesus to COME AND SEE which means to find the time to be with Jesus, to know Him and experience His love and compassion. He further encouraged them to join and participate actively in the PDYD 2 Celebration in November 2012 as it will be a great opportunity for the youth to know more about Jesus through the Eucharistic celebrations, catechesis, talks and prayer sessions.

        This invitation to COME and SEE was repeated on the session given by Jelorie Peroja. From the video clip on the “encounter between Jesus and the disciples of John” (John 1:35-42) and the sharing that followed, the participants were asked to come up with a collage showing their own experience of being invited to know Jesus and their response to the invitation.

        Michael Peter Foo, in his session on GO and TELL, challenged the young people to be more creative in telling the story of Jesus to their friends and fellow youth. He reminded them to be courageous and persevering as they share and live the Gospel.

        The outdoor games added to the fun and excitement as young people collected tokens for every game completed. The tokens were later put together and revealed the theme of the PDYD 2 celebrations which is “Come and See… Go and Tell… Rejoice and Celebrate!”. To encourage them to save for PDYD 2, each participant received a tin can which will serve as a piggy bank.

        Arokiamary, the program coordinator, was happy that the gathering turned out well. The excitement for the PDYD 2 celebration is building up and Denise Veronica Perreau expressed it with enthusiasm. “The gathering in Kampar was very youthful. I had a very good time and I learned a lot about PDYD 2. I’m looking forward to the main event in November!”.

Spiritual Preparation for PDYD 2

Pusat Formasi atau Formation Centre Holy Name of Jesus di Balik Pulau dimeriahkan dengan program Weekend Recollection dan aktiviti yang disertai oleh 28 ahli Penang Diocesan Youth Day II (PDYD 2). Program yang menggabungkan semua ahli jawatankuasa utama (Main Oraganizing Comittee) dan tempatan (Local Organizing Comittee) PDYD 2 ini berlangsung selama 2 hari, iaitu bermula 14 hingga 15 Julai dengan tujuan untuk mempersiapkan semua ahli dari segi rohaniah untuk sambutan PDYD 2 serta untuk menguatkan kerjasama antara ahli jawatankuasa. Tema untuk program ini adalah ‘24 Hours with God : Service and Fellowhip... Discipleship and Evangelisation’.

Program dimulakan dengan doa pembukaan. Para peserta program berada dalam keadaan sunyi untuk mengenang kembali pengalaman mereka masing-masing terutama sekali yang berkaitan dengan persiapan untuk PDYD 2. Ini diikuti dengan sesi ceramah berkenaan Service yang diberikan oleh Sr. Gertrude Tan, IJS.

P. Kevin Eruthayanathan mengendalikan satu sesi berkenaan Fellowsip yang menekankan tentang perhubungan kita dengan Tuhan yang mengalir dan terpancar menerusi perhubungan kita dengan individu lain. Dia menggalakkan para peserta program untuk mengenali dan mengenalpasti kelebihan antara satu sama lain yang secara tidak langsung akan merangsang serta menggalakkan kerjasama mereka. Malam tersebut diakhiri dengan sebuah permainan bernama Taboo yang membantu kita untuk memahami dan berkomunikasi antara satu sama lain sebagai satu kumpulan.

Acara kemuncak untuk hari pertama bagi program ini adalah perayaan Ekaristi bersama-sama dengan ahli paroki gereja Holy Name of Jesus dan Ikon serta Salib PDYD 2 dibawa sebagai persembahan semasa perayaan Ekaristi ini. Fr. Dominic Santhiyagu, Pengarah Youth Network Keuskupan Pulau Pinang, mengajak dan menggalakkan ahli paroki berdoa untuk kejayaan perayaan PDYD 2.

Hari kedua bermula dengan sesi ringkas puji dan sembah seterusnya diikuti sesi oleh Fr. Dominic Santhiyagu, iaitu Discipleship and Evangelisation. Dalam ceramahnya, Fr. Dominic berkongsi tiga jalan untuk mengikuti Tuhan (Discipleship) yang merangkumi panggilan sebagai pengikut, membuka hati untuk menerima Tuhan dan membawa berita baik mengenai Tuhan kepada orang ramai, terutama sekali kepada para belia.

Program 24 Hours With God atau 24 jam Bersama Tuhan diakhiri dengan sebuah perayaan ekaristi yang menyemarakkan semangat para pemimpin-pemimpin belia ini untuk bergerak maju dan terus bekerjasama sebagai sebuah pasukan untuk memastikan kejayaan PDYD 2.

PDYD 2 Committee Members Spiritual Preparation

         On 14th-15th July, the Holy Name of Jesus Formation Centre in Balik Pulau came bursting with life and activities as 28 members of the Penang Diocesan Youth Day II (PDYD 2) main and local organizing committees gathered for a weekend recollection. The joint recollection was one of the activities organized by PDYN to prepare the members spiritually for the PDYD 2 celebration and to strengthen fellowship among the teams. The theme of the recollection was 24 Hours with God: Service and Fellowship… Discipleship and Evangelisation.

          It started with an opening prayer that prepared the participants to enter into the journey. They were invited to be in silence and gather their experiences in the past days especially those related to PDYD 2 preparations. It was followed by a talk on Service which was given by Sr. Gertrude Tan, IJS.

         P. Kevin Eruthayanathan facilitated a session on fellowship which stressed on one´s relationship with God that flows and shows in our relationships with others. He encouraged the participants to know more each other´s gifts which will foster teamwork. The night ended with a game, Taboo, that facilitated the discovery of how we understand and communicate with each other as members of the team.

          The highlight of the first day was a Eucharistic celebration with the parishioners of the Church of the Holy Name of Jesus. During the presentation of gifts, the PDYD 2 Icon and Cross were offered. Fr. Dominic Santhiyagu, Director of Penang Diocesan Youth Network, invited and encouraged the parishioners to pray for the success of the PDYD 2 celebration.

         The second day began with a short praise and worship followed by a session on Discipleship and Evangelisation by Fr. Dominic Santhiyagu. In his talk, he presented the 3 Ways of Discipleship which consist of being called as a disciple, allowing oneself to be evangelised and being sent to evangelise others especially the young people.


         The 24 Hours with God was concluded with a Eucharistic celebration which empowered the leaders to move forward and continue working together as a team for the success of PDYD 2.

PDYD2 Icon and Logo explained

With the event approaching us, here are some information about the symbols that represent the event. 

First up is the Icon of PDYD2, an image of Mary,Mother of God.  

The stars on her forehead and right shoulder symbolize Her Virginity before, during and after the birth of Jesus. 

The Greek initials mean Mary Mother of God. Her costume shows her as royalty.  

Baby Jesus is gently touching the face of His Mother. This portrays Mary as the bridge between heaven and earth(Jesus from Heaven, and Mary from earth.)

The scroll that Jesus is holding represents the word becoming flesh, again in the form of Jesus.  

Mary is looking forward, telling us that this is my son.

Our lady was chosen as PDYD2 icon as she is a perfect example of the theme ‘Come and See, Go and Tell and Celebrate’. Mary saw the plan that God had for her, she shared with Elizabeth her joy and then celebrated the greatest gift of God to the world, Jesus. These symbolizations are personal reflections shared by the team after reflecting on the picture for some time.

Next is the PDYD2 logo itself.

The Cross symbolizes Christ as the center of the celebration while its red color depicts Martyrdom, Call for Witness and Evangelization.

Next, the letter M stands for Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God.

Blue color is the Penang state color while yellow shoes Wisdom, Joy, Happiness and Creativity.

PDYD 2 aspires to bring the World Youth Day experience to the youth in the diocese. It aims to transform youths to be agents of change in this society. 

The cross and icon will be travelling throughout the 28 parishes for parish level celebration from March to August 2012, followed by district level events.  And the highlight will be the 4 days PDYD2 event on 16^th to 19^th November 2012 in Penang Island.

PDYD2 HEATING UP!!

With just four months more to go Penang Diocese Youth Day 2 is beginning to get heated up. 

With the cross and the icon having completed 54% of its journey through out the diocese and the road show crews going around parishes promoting and exhibiting the event, many youths are being well informed and are excited about participating in this auspicious occasion.

Penang Diocese Youth Day came into existence firstly in 2008 in The Parish of Our Lady of Lourdes Silibin Ipoh. It was sparked off with a group of parish youths with Fr Dominic Santhiyagu the Diocese Youth Coordinator who envisioned to re-create the World Youth Day experience here in the Diocese of Penang, and thus in 2008 Penang Diocese celebrated the first Diocese Youth Day .

After 3 years, once again the youth office of the Diocese of Penang has decided to organize the Penang Diocese Youth Day 2 with the theme Rejoice In The Lord Always (Phil 4:4) from the 16^th to the 19^th of November 2012. This year the event will be celebrated in Land of the Pearl of Orient (Penang Island) with an estimation of 1000 youth coming from all over the Diocese for 4 days and 3 nights. 

Cathedral of Holy Spirit

They will all gather together in the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit on the 16^th of November 2012 for the opening ceremony and mass after which the youths will be sent to their lodging places in the 4 different parishes according allocated according to their language groups around the island and they will be transported around in charted buses. Some youth will also have the opportunity to stay with foster families around the island who will look after them and transport them around during the course of the event. 

Martyrs of College General, Penang

Once in the respective parishes the youths will attend catechesis presented to them by well known priest’s and eloquent speakers who are experts in the respective topics. The youths will also go through interesting workshops and many activities lined up for them. They will also have time to go around the island as tourist to visit many historical sites and religious places of worship which will educate them on the richness of this small island spiritually and economically.

The climax of this whole event will take place on Sunday in whereby the participants will go on pilgrimage trip to St.Anne’s Church in Bukit Mertajam after spending two nights in their respective parishes and foster families. All these youths will travel together to B.M for the closing ceremony which will begin with the way of the cross around the church grounds and a night concert performed by the Prodigal Disciples from Klang and the youths will have a great time singing and praising God in an open door field.

During this the same time youths will be exposed to the various religious orders that will have their exhibition booths around the parish ground for two days to help these youth in their vocation and discernment.   With a grand final mass the youth would have had excellent weekend of fun with God and HIS Spirit through HIS ministers.
